Our Work

at the Center for Nationalist Studies

Machinery for Grassroots Education
The development of a nationalist consciousness over a large segement of the studentry is born through the untiring effort of the CNS Grassroots Education Teams (Gred) in conscienticizing UP students in their classrooms and organizations.

Gred Teams are formed by three to seven members of CNS coming from the same college or department. Aside from conducting education and information campaigns, these teams are aso responsible for recruiting new members of the organization, or forming local chapters of the Center.

Advancing Nationalism and Advocacy Work
Through the years, CNS has actively defended and promoted the rights and welfare of the students and the people. It took part in many important struggles such as those against the Marcos dictatorship and the US military bases in the Philippines. In partnership with the People, it also fought for genuine land reform, human rights, and genuine economic and political sovereignty.

As a membership of the Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights at UP (STAND-UP), it resolutely performs its share in championing the welfare and interests of the Filipino students.

Venue for Alternative Education
The task of promoting and developing a nationalist, scientific and mass-oriented education is vigorously implemented within the organization, as it is without. The Center seeks to equip members and non-members as well with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for an effective and sustained advocacy work.

Among the many study courses offered by the CNS are:
Study on the State of Philippine Education
Study on the History and Current State of UP Education
Short Course on Philippine Society and Revolution
(a book by Amado Guerrero)
Study on the Philippines' Mode of Production
(an interview of Jose Maria Sison by Juliet de Lima)
Course on Student Activism and Nationalism
(from essays in the book Struggle for National Democracy)

The CNS provides the above-mentioned courses as well as many other topics of interest through the following activities:
Regular Friday Sessions: brief educational discussions on the burning issues affecting the youth, studentry, and the entire nation held during Friday afternoons after classes.
Talks on Nationalism: thorough and in-depth studies on Philippine history, society and the progressive Movement.
Thursday Afternoons with Mao: collective discussion on important works of Mao Zedong and other contemporary social and political thinkers held during Thursday afternoons.

For students to get a better understanding on the actual stste of Philippine society, exposure trips and immersion programs to peasant communities in the provinces, and in worker and urban poor communities in the National Capitol Region are regularly conducted.

The Organization as a Specialized Institution
CNS prides itsel as being the only student organization in the country operating a library. Since 1983, the library services students and individuals coming from UP and othe universities.

It keeps books, magazines, journals, and other documents on various topics related to Philippine education, history, culture, society, and the People's nationalist movement. It also has some rare publications of revolutionary individuals and organizations not found in any other library.

Through its Publications and Information Committee, CNS provides the following:
Pintig: official newsletter of the Center tackling issues affecting the students and the people.
Kampilan: a semestral jornal of the CNS printing published and unpublished works of activists and political and social scientists and thinkers.
Alab: an annual compilation of literary and artistic works by members and comrades of the Center.

The Center for Nationalist Studies at the University of the Philippines at Diliman also conducts research and documentation work. It assists other student groups and institutions in gathering data and information on issues affecting the studentry and the people.
